October is a month of
October 2018
wonder and transition,
a time of enchantment.
In October, summer's
grip on the weather
really starts to slip and
we're treated to
pleasantly cool, dry
air; colorful, leafy
vistas; and, often,
stunningly evocative sunsets.
It's the month when, across the nation,
cooperative businesses such as your
electric cooperative celebrate the co-op
business model that bring goods and
services to millions of Americans each day.
Cooperatives are owned by those they
serve. Because co-ops exist to serve their
owners - you, the member - their
emphasis is always on the person, not
the profit. Executive Editor Richard
Johnstone comments eloquently on
October as Cooperative Month in this
issue's Viewpoint column on page 2.
October is also when kids dress up
and head out seeking goodies on
Halloween, at month's end. Halloween
has changed over the years and is today
usually a more organized celebration,
with special events held at churches,
community centers, schools and similar
locales. Kids' Korner columnist Anne
Dellinger in this issue shares a number of
ways that parents can help their kids
enjoy the fruits of their trick-or-treat
efforts without the unfortunate side
effects of too much sugar. Anne's ideas to
help take the edge off your little ones'
post-trick-or-treat time can be found on
pages 34 and 35.
This month is also a favorite time for
two American traditions - football
season and tailgating parties. Our
Commonwealth Kitchen feature on page
36 includes an all-star lineup of readercontributed
tailgating treats sure to
score big at any gridiron pre-game or
halftime festivities.
As this year winds down in an aura of
autumnal beauty, enjoy all that the season
