CALLING ALL
1. Separate the candies by color, place in
separate plastic bags and crush each
with hammer.
2. Form a circular or oval mold from tinfoil,
making a border to hold the candy inside
the foil.
3. Roll up a little ball of tinfoil and place it in
the center of the mold to create a cavity in
the geode.

5. Place candy of one color
in a circle around the
center tinfoil ball. Add
other colors until the
mold is filled.
6. Place the molds on a cookie sheet. Bake at 250 degrees for 3 minutes.
Cool, remove from molds and admire! Or, if you can't resist, take a bite
out of your beautiful, edible rocks.

If Wint-O-Green Lifesaver Mints are in your trick-or-treat collection,
you can make some sparks fly!
The best time to do this experiment is at night in an area where there is
absolutely no light. Allow your eyes to become
accustomed to the darkness. Then lay several
Wint-O-Green Lifesavers on an unbreakable, solid
surface such as a cutting board. Take a hammer and
carefully smash the mints while watching for tiny
bluish-white flashes of light coming from the candy.
Observe closely because it will happen very quickly
and will be only a little spark. A mirror placed
directly behind the board will reflect the " lightning, "
making it easier to see.
Science background - When the Lifesaver is
smashed, light is produced by friction in a process
called triboluminescence. The crushed sugar
molecules release electrons that bump into nitrogen molecules in the air.
When they collide, these electrons pass on energy to the nitrogen molecules
causing them to vibrate and give off light. Most of the light is ultraviolet
(non-visible) but the oil of wintergreen helps convert the ultraviolet into
visible light, which makes the bluish flash brighter. n

Halloween candy. Of all the
hundreds of millions of
pounds of sweets purchased
for this sugar-filled holiday, chocolate
candies were the top sellers. However, no candy says Halloween
like a beloved little yellow, orange and white treat that dates
back to the 1880s. It has now become an icon among holiday
candies and appears in a variety of colors and flavors for
Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter and July 4th.
