New layout, local music, exciting entertainment amp up this year's fair.
A
fresh, new layout, Virginia
music and fun attractions
will give the State Fair of
Virginia an updated look and feel
this fall. While the fair may look a
bit different, it's still the same fall
family attraction that has become
a Virginia tradition.
Virginia agriculture, competitions,
fair foods and rides will be showcased
during the fair's 10-day run Sept. 29
through Oct. 8 at The Meadow Event
Park in Caroline County.
The lights of the Midway will greet
fairgoers as they approach Route 30,
thanks to layout changes.
" Customer feedback is important
to us and our customers want less
walking and a more condensed
layout. That's exactly what we're
giving them, " explains Marlene
Pierson-Jolliffe, the fair's executive
director. " We've also made some
changes in Harvest Landing, the area
with agricultural exhibits like
Young MacDonald's Farm and
the Kidway to better
accommodate families with
young children. "

Attraction
for ease of navigation with strollers.
Young MacDonald's Farm has been
expanded to include a beef cattle and
sheep paddock. The popular field crop
and vegetable garden displays will be
even bigger and better - and
centrally located.
Starting at 7 p.m. all 10 days of the
fair, the main stage will be filled with
the best music of the commonwealth,
featuring everything from country and
'70s smooth jams to '80s hard rock and
the best bluegrass. The Crooked Road,
Virginia's Heritage Music Trail, will take
the stage on Sept. 30 and will feature
performances by Five Mile Mountain
Road, The New Ballards Branch
Bogtrotters and Adam McPeak and
Mountain Thunder.
Also new this year is a special events
tent that will house the ever-popular
annual Giant Watermelon and Giant
Pumpkin contests weigh-in on Sept. 30,
and new events like the Blue Ribbon
Craft Beer Fest, which will feature
nearly 40 breweries Oct. 6-8.
A delicious farm-to-fork dinner, Barn
Appetit, is another new feature of the
fair and will take place Oct. 6. The
menu will include local foods and
brews, including the second in a series
of Secretariat-themed craft beers from
