Did you know that Virginia is the nation's sixthlargest
apple producer? Each year, apples
add $235 million to our state's economy, with
about 70 percent of the 5-million bushels
turned into products such as applesauce,
juice and cider. Here are some great ways to
enjoy this healthy fruit!

Ingredients:
4 cups peeled, cored & sliced
tart apples
2⁄3 cup packed brown sugar
½ cup all-purpose flour
½ cup oats
¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¾ teaspoon ground nutmeg
1
⁄3 cup butter, softened
Directions: Arrange apples in a greased 8-by-8-inch pan. Mix remaining ingredients and
sprinkle over apples. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes until apples are tender. Serve
warm with ice cream or whipped cream.
Ingredients:
1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 ½ cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3 cups finely chopped apples
1 cup chopped nuts
Directions: Cream butter and sugar,
beat in eggs. Add dry ingredients,
beating well after each addition. Mix will
be thick so it is easier to stir in apples
and nuts with a spoon or spatula. Press
into greased 9-by-13-inch baking pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

Slow-Cooked Baked Apples

Ingredients:
6 large whole apples, peeled & cored
¼ cup raisins
½ cup brown sugar
½ stick margarine
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons chopped walnuts
Directions: Place apples in a crockpot sprayed with non-stick spray. Combine remaining
ingredients and fill the apples with this mixture. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours.
