Virginia apples come in many varieties, including
Golden Delicious, Rome, Granny Smith and Gala.
The warm days and cool nights of the mountain and
valley regions offer perfect growing conditions. Apple
harvest spans from September through November.
Virginia and Maryland apples are popular for a fresh fruit
crunch and used in products such as applesauce, apple
cider and apple butter.
Skillet Apples

Ingredients:
cup butter
½ cup sugar
½ teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons corn starch
1 cup water
4 Golden Delicious apples,
peeled and sliced
Directions:
Melt butter in skillet. Stir in sugar, cinnamon and corn starch. Mix
well and stir in water. Add apple slices. Cook over medium heat,
stirring occasionally, until tender - about 10 minutes. Makes 4-6
servings.

Ingredients:
3 cups Honeycrisp apples,
peeled, cored and diced
3 teaspoons cinnamon
6 tablespoons, plus 2 cups,
sugar, divided
3 cups flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup oil
4 eggs, beaten
¼ cup orange juice
1 teaspoon vanilla
icing (optional)
Directions:
Heat oven to 350 degrees. In medium bowl, mix apples, cinnamon and
5 tablespoons sugar until combined. Set aside. In large bowl, mix flour,
2 cups sugar, baking powder and salt until combined. Form well in middle
of mixture. Add oil, eggs, orange juice and vanilla; mix until blended. In
springform pan, pour half of batter. Add apple mixture. Pour remaining
batter over apple mixture. Sprinkle remaining sugar over batter. Bake
40-50 minutes, or until top is golden brown and tester comes out clean
and dry. Drizzle with icing, if desired. Serves 8-16.

VIRGINIA APPLE PIZZAS

Ingredients:
3 Virginia apples
2 tablespoons lemon juice
yogurt
peanut butter
banana
berries
dried fruit
granola
chocolate chips
chopped nuts
cinnamon
chocolate syrup
honey
Directions:
Add lemon juice and water to a bowl. Core apples and slice quarterinch
slices. Drop slices into lemon water to keep the apples bright
and crisp. Create a pizza party assembly with bowls of toppings.
Drain apples and spread yogurt or peanut butter as a base across
the entire apple slice. Top with your choice of toppings. Create
sweet or savory apple pizzas.
