'We've Missed You'
The State Fair of Virginia is back in 2021
with something for everyone
T
he classics never go out of style
at the State Fair of Virginia.
Following a one-year hiatus,
traditional arts, crafts, livestock,
agriculture-based competitions and
family entertainment will return
Sept. 24 through Oct. 3 at The Meadow
Event Park in Caroline County.
After a year of pandemic-related
cancellations, fairgoers who crave
familiar sights, sounds and flavors will
find them at this year's event. Aside
from small changes to the fair's physical
footprint, organizers say guests can
expect a traditional fair experience.
" The 2021 State Fair of Virginia
will be very much similar to prior
fairs, but we're being mindful of the
layout, allowing guests to spread
out, " says Marlene Jolliffe, the fair's
executive director. As of mid-summer,
no official social distancing or masking
mandates had been announced.
THE CLASSIC FAIR
In addition to rides and indulgent
culinary delights, the event celebrates
the best of Virginia's agricultural
heritage through scholarship initiatives,
creative programming and a focus on
the commonwealth's natural resources.
" This is the classic State Fair of
Virginia that people know and love, "
Jolliffe says.
Fairgoers will find
returning favorites like
Rosaire's Racing Pigs and
master chainsaw carver
Ben Risney, as well as new acts like
The Flying Cortes trapeze show.
Jolliffe says two nights of
professional rodeo, presented by
Revenge Roughstock Co., will present
barrel racing and bronc and bull-riding
to audiences on the edge of their seats.
While the musical lineup is still
taking shape, Jolliffe confirms that
Riley Green, the Academy of Country
Music's 2020 New Male Artist of the
Year, will be one of the headliners.
With tunes described as " blue-collar
sounds for the working man, by the
working man, " Green's hit songs
include " There was this Girl " and the
platinum-certified ballad " I Wish
Grandpas Never Died. "
Creative arts contests such as those
for basketry, needlework and
photography, as well as culinary
competitions, will resume, Jolliffe
says, as will youth livestock shows,
and other 4-H and FFA competitions.

AG ON PARADE
Families can enhance their
knowledge of Virginia agriculture in
the Meadow Pavilion, which showcases
multiple organizations representing
the state's farm products.
Virginia Farm Bureau Federation,
which owns the State Fair, will be in
the pavilion with " Farm Life 360. "
