TROPICANA
LAS VEGAS
[ON LOCATION] GREG OATES
Following a $200 million renovation, “The Trop” brings South Beach style to the Las Vegas Strip.
L
ocated on the southern part of the Las Vegas Strip, the 1,600-room Tropicana Las Vegas recently completed a $200 million transformation. The new South Beachinspired look includes the Bagatelle Beach & Supper Club, with daybeds and cabanas spread around the long, palm-lined lagoon pool. During the day, planners can block off part of the pool or the sleek interior space for semi-private or private group events. At night, create a VIP setting with bottle service and dinner inside the elegant supper club, which hosts a variety of well known entertainers. The pool is rimmed with low-lying guest rooms featuring balconies for attendees who want quick access to the pool. That’s a really big plus on the Strip where very few hotel rooms have balconies. Bookending the pool, there are the two main towers. The Paradise Tower includes the lobby and casino floor, while the Club Tower houses 60,000 sf of flexible meeting and exhibit space, as well as the business center. At check-in and the business center, the staff was exceedingly friendly and helpful. They’ve done a nice job with the new room look, bringing a fresh Tommy Bahama-style ambience. The decor features custom-designed furnishings, plantation shutters and all-white linens. Each room offers excellent natural light and either an oversized business desk or comfortable chaise lounge. All of the rooms feature king beds or two queens, 42-inch LCD TVs, iHome docks, Kohler sinks and WiFi.
“There’s really a whole new culture at Tropicana Las Vegas,” says Gavin Mealiffe, vice president of sales. “We have two of the top restaurants on TripAdvisor, first-class entertainment and our distinctive beach and supper club... We’re a mid-size hotel by Las Vegas standards and a lot of our groups like that. You know, if you tell someone you’ll meet them in the casino, you’ll actually be able to find them.” Mealiffe explains that the hotel does roughly an even split between corporate and association business. He says many of the groups like to buyout either of the two main restaurants, which he says are “highly regarded in town for their excellent cuisine, value and great service.” The Beach Cafe leading toward the pool is popular for lunch. Groups can network either inside the bright, open dining room or outside by the waterfalls, landscaped grounds and many palm trees. For dinner buyouts up to 150 diners, Biscayne Steak, Sea & Wine is a classic steakhouse reinterpreted for Las Vegas clientele. It has a sophisticated, contemporary vibe, and the chefs know what they’re doing with a dry aged, bone-in ribeye. There are also three lounges, including the pool bar and 4,000sf Tropicana Lounge, available for 150-pax buyouts. Rounding out the list of amenities, the all-new Glow, a Mandara Spa offers more than 50 treatments to prepare you for the day’s meetings or your big night on the town. troplv.com; lvcva.com
