Re:START Mall is a shipping container community in
Christchurch, New Zealand. It was built following
the major earthquake that destroyed part of the downtown core in 2011. Today, the area
is thriving as one of the world’s most innovative New Urbanism projects, located within
a few blocks of the Convention Centre & Performing Arts Precinct. One of the
highlights, the Quake City exhibition focuses on earthquake science, the human side of
disaster recovery, and the future of sustainable living and development.
In August, the new $6 million Cardboard Cathedral opened, constructed out of
100 large cardboard tubes coated with waterproof polyurethane. The venue is expected
to last 10 years while a permanent replacement is built. Until then, the facility will be
used for concerts, exhibitions and community events for 700 pax.
