The Colonial Quarter is the ideal place to
familiarize the group with Dominican dishes,
ranging from soups and stews to a plate of
arroz and crispy fried tostones from a local
mom-and-pop establishment, topped off
with a sweet coconut dessert.
"Dominican Republic's unique
features extend far beyond the beaches,"
says Magaly Toribio, spokesperson for
the Dominican Republic Ministry of
Tourism. "We're known for our rich
culture and history and the 16th-century
architecture and incredible gastronomy of
Santo Domingo."
Last year, Dominican Republic
welcomed 12 new properties, and it is
expected to add 15,000 new rooms and
update 6,000 existing rooms in 2018.
Among the highlights, Club Med recently
began construction on Club Med Miches,
located on Dominican Republic's east
coast in El Seibo Province and scheduled
to open next December. Casa de Campo
Resort & Villas recently opened a new
Golf Learning Center and practice course
and added the new Minitas Beach Club &
Restaurant to its exclusive private beach,
Playa Minitas. On select weekends, Casa

de Campo hosts "Flavours of the World," a
weekend event pairing internationally known
chefs with the resort's culinary team to
create special tasting menus.
This meetings-ready resort has a
variety of meeting rooms in two conference
centers, with more than 15,000 sf of
meeting space. Barcelo's iconic El
Embajador just unveiled a two-year, $40
million renovation project that touched its
10,000 sf of meeting space, upgraded
guest rooms, and added a wellness and spa
center. The historic property is located in
Santo Domingo's Bella Vista neighborhood.
In the Bavaro area of Punta Cana, the
new 730-suite Royalton Bavaro Resort
& Spa features a world-class spa, lazy
river, beachfront access and the "Culinary
Experience Chef's Table," where a personal
chef takes attendees through seven
courses, with tidbits on the significance of
local ingredients and musical selections
accompanying each dish.

AIC Hotel Group has two new
luxury properties worth taking
note of. UNICO 20˚87˚ Hotel
Riviera Maya is the first of a
new luxury all-inclusive concept focused on
immersing guests in the culture of the region,
from locally inspired cocktails and cuisine to
the local artwork.
A rotating chef program at the restaurant
Cueva Siete allows attendees to experience
emerging local culinary talents and groups
to experience private cooking classes.
Spontaneous pop-up programs offer group
activities such as mezcal tastings, a cocktail
hour in the jungle and full moon parties on
the beach. The resort has 448 rooms that are
decorated with local art available for purchase
and an 11,600-sf ballroom, along with 10
breakout rooms and various outdoor spaces.
All eyes are on Nobu Hotel Los
Cabos, which will make its debut early next
year-the first Nobu property in Mexico. The
