Naturalist Charles Darwin could not have possibly
known that the magical islands that inspired his
long-lived theory of evolution would one day inspire
corporate groups to grow and evolve as well. I was
fortunate enough to experience the "Galapagos
effect" (page 70) during a recent Southern Loop
cruise with Celebrity Cruises, and what astounded

me, aside from the pure beauty and staggering
biodiversity of the islands, was the level of investment
each guest placed in creating their own cruise
experience. The immersive itineraries easily bonded
us, and yet the narrative of the story changed
considerably depending on who you asked (and
likely, whose social media profile you visited).
Today's meetings attendees are equally enthused

about having a say in the narrative, or the overall
messaging of events. Combine this with increased
demand for transformational event experiences and it's
clear that the MICE landscape is drastically changing:
attendees are sending a message to meetings.
We delve into this topic throughout our culture and
creativity issue. In Indianapolis, Indiana, and Las
Vegas, Nevada, (page 18), the narrative is shifting

toward sustainable meetings, and boy do these cities
deliver. "A Message for Meetings" (24) explores, in
part, how indigenous traditions are circling back
into meetings and conventions as the next big thing;
and the trend trickles from New Zealand to just
outside of Albuquerque (55) where attendees are
learning the art of adobe brick laying. We walked in
the footsteps of G8 dignitaries at the gorgeous Sea
Island Resort (65) in Georgia, dined by rodeo in
Calgary, Canada, and were wrapped in warm aloha
spirit during the Incentive Research Foundation's
annual conference in Maui, Hawaii (66). The stories
are written for you and yet continue.
