Dear Hunters and Trappers,
Those proud to call Wyoming home value its dedication to keeping traditions alive. Preserving customs is an
important way to hand down our understanding of the past to future generations. For some, trapping is a traditional
pastime and a way to spend time outdoors. For others, it's a way to earn a living or a way to protect livestock.
The individual's decision to participate in regulated trapping varies, but one thing is for certain - trappers are
devoted conservationists who respect the animals they harvest and the land they trap on.
The regulation of trapping has changed over time to align with newly-established best practices. And methods
have evolved, too. Trapping in Wyoming remains a valuable wildlife and predator management practice. Regulated
trapping helps reduce transmissible diseases like rabies, prevents crop damage and helps fund wildlife conservation.
Trapping is regulated by Wyoming state statutes and Wyoming Game and Fish Commission regulations. This
brochure covers the rules for trapping or hunting furbearers - mink, bobcat, muskrat, weasel, badger, marten
and beaver. The brochure is a helpful resource for trappers and includes best practices. We hope the information
presented can help the modern trapper stay informed and responsibly practice their craft on shared land.
Today's modern trapper is held to higher ethical standards than ever before. The art of trapping is often scrutinized,
and Game and Fish wants to thank trappers for their willingness to trap responsibly and for placing traps in areas
with low conflict potential.
The preservation of our trapping heritage is meaningful. It's why the right to trap is codified in the Wyoming
constitution. I wish you the best as you pursue your craft.
Brian Nesvik, Game and Fish Director
