ASK GAME AND FISH
Q: How does Game and Fish
keep roadside bears safe?
A:
State highways and bears don't mix
well. Annually, the Wyoming Game
and Fish Department works to keep bears
and bear-lovers safe on the roads.
Game and Fish Large Carnivore Supervisor Dan Thompson explains hanging near the
road is often dangerous for the apex species,
even if they are a boon for photographers
and wildlife lovers.
" Bears feeding close to roads can become
habituated to humans and vehicles. That
means they keep heading back time and
time again regardless of the danger of the
roadway, " Thompson said. " Bears frequenting highways increases the odds for them or
their offspring to be hit by a vehicle or come
into more contact with people. Both could
lead to more bold behaviors or even food
conditioning, requiring further management
actions to keep bears and people safe. "
Game and Fish cannot respond to every
roadside bear occurrence. But, when the
safety of the bear and the public is in question, Game and Fish will try to haze the bear
away from the road. Hazing is a tool to help
bears recognize the danger of the road and
reduce any habituation to a location.
" Many tools can be used for hazing. Often
we do this simply by honking vehicle horns
or using cracker shells, a practice common
for wildlife managers across the country.
We work closely with our partners like the
U.S. Forest Service, Wyoming Department
of Transportation and Wyoming Highway
Patrol for ground management like signage
to let people know there is wildlife on the
road, " Thompson said.
Encouraging bears or any wildlife to move
away from roads is for the public's safety as
much as the animal. Annually, more than
6,000 animals are hit by vehicles on roadways, including several grizzly bears.

Department public information officer.

* Watch for warning signs and reduced speed
limits due to wildlife presence.
* Stay in your car and stay at least 100 yards
from bears.
* Use binoculars or spotting scopes for safe

familiar with humans.
* Never feed bears or leave food accessible
to them.
