Q: How do I dispose of expired bear spray?

A:

Bear spray is one of the main lines of defense
the Wyoming Game and Fish Department
recommends to anyone recreating in bear country.
When deployed correctly, it can be effective in staving
off an aggressive bear. But, even if you are expertly
trained in the use of bear spray, an expired can won't
be as effective in an emergency.
Bear spray doesn't last forever, and if you have an
old can it might be time to replace it with a newer,
more effective canister. Depending on the brand, the
date could be printed on the label in a number of
places or even engraved on the aluminum.
While the expired spray and caspaicinoids don't
completely go bad, it's not going to work the same.
"Bear spray expires because it is an aerosol. Over
time the propellant and seals can break down causing
spray pattern issues, which means it may not make as
big of a spray pattern or go the same distance," said
Dusty Lasseter, Game and Fish Bear Wise coordinator. "It is also subject to regulations by the Environmental Protection Agency."

Lasseter recommends a couple options for disposing of bear spray when it's past its prime. A local
hazardous waste management facility can dispose of
the canister if you drop it off. Alternatively, you can
empty the container yourself by spraying it outside.
"You can count this as practice," Lasseter said.
"But the potency of the spray remains, so be very
careful."
To empty, choose a calm day in an outdoor space.
Ensure neither people nor animals are around the
area. Point the spray toward the ground, remove the
safety and spray. Once the can is empty, wrap it in
newspaper to throw away.
Bear spray is typically good four years after the
manufacture date if stored correctly. When you're
not using it, stash it in a cool, dry place at room
temperature. Never leave bear spray exposed to the
sun in your vehicle as the heat may cause the canister
to explode.
