OPENING SHOT Belly up to the bar Photo: by Peter Mangolds Gear: Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Settings: 1/250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 400 6 | September 2020 L ast fall I went searching for moose near Kelly Warm Springs in the Jackson area. I spotted a group of 11 bulls moving toward the river, so I quickly parked nearby and hiked to get a good angle. I thought at least one bull would cross the river, and I set up for a shot. I had a particular image in my head and, without thinking too much, quickly jumped in the river boots and all. I squatted to get to water level - soaking myself and destroying the spare batteries in my pocket - when one by one these four bulls came up to drink. I was absolutely stunned that they lined up so perfectly and seemingly in order. It was only a brief moment and nobody else had arrived to capture it, so I essentially had them all to myself. The bulls then joined the others, and I made the wet march back to my vehicle. It was an incredible moment that I hope comes around again.
