RECOMMENDED READ
For those who read and enjoyed Rene Schell's January
article about trumpeter swans, if you are really into
these birds I highly recommend a fascinating true story
of trumpeter swans wintering in the remote Atnarko
Valley of British Columbia, their presence discovered
in 1925 by an amateur ornithologist of the Audubon
Society from Connecticut during a grizzly hunt.
" Crusoe of Lonesome Lake, " written by Leland
Stowe, is somewhat hard to find and was published
in 1957, but if you can lay your hands on a copy the
efforts will be worthwhile. It is one of the greatest
books I've ever read.

PHOTO QUESTIONS
The 2024 photo issue was another great job! My
compliments to your staff, as well as your judges.
There were a couple photos I wondered about. I will
say I am no expert, and your expert panel probably
ensured that all the photos were the real deal. But
Midnight magic on page 31, how likely is it to capture
the moon, stars almost down to the horizon, and the
northern lights all in a photo with an exposure time
short enough that the geyser spray doesn't turn into
a huge blur? That seems unlikely.
Similarly, Dragon's breath on page 35 raised questions.
It's early enough for the sun to just be setting
behind the geyser cone, and yet the stars are brilliant

Thanks for reaching out with your concerns about the
technique and processing of these photos. The judging panel
did not see any strong evidence to conclude these photos
were manipulated to the point we did not feel comfortable
publishing them, and follow-ups with the photographers
revealed they were taken with long exposures. In my opinion,
all three photos were well thought out - utilizing
creative, long-exposure techniques. It's worth noting the
moon is behind the geyser in Dragon's breath, not the sun.
When it comes to the photo entries we receive, we are at
the mercy of the integrity of our entrants. The Wyoming
Wildlife staff is currently considering updates to our
contest rules to keep pace with the ever-evolving world of
photography and photo manipulation. - P.O.
in the dark sky with several stars even showing through
the illuminated geyser spray? Perhaps pros with photography
skills well beyond mine can pull that off. If
so, perhaps Wyoming Wildlife could publish a few tips
from the pros on how we amateurs could try out a few
of those advanced skills.
The photo by Kinley Bollinger on page 41 also
is " faked, " but in the right way. Her dad could not
actually be skiing, as the title says. Instead, he had to
be a statue for the 13-second exposure. But it's great.
She was very creative, dad played along and she got a
great shot - in the cold and dark, no less.
