People flock to places like Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks to see wildlife such as grizzly bears, but there are several other places around the state to view wildlife and Wyoming's

ike many people, I impatiently waited for a notification
about a popular grizzly bear in Grand
Teton National Park emerging from her den.
The bear, marked for research as No. 399, made
headlines when she emerged from her den in 2020 with
four cubs in tow. She pushed those cubs out on their own
last May and proceeded to mate again. At age 26, it was a
unique feat, and if she emerged with cubs at 27 years old
this year, she would be the oldest known grizzly bear to
reproduce in the Yellowstone Ecosystem.
But as the news arrived of the bruin appearing on
May 16 with one cub of the year sporting a blonde
ring of hair around its neck and chest, I thought
twice about making the drive to Grand Teton
National Park where the family lives. It would be
a chaotic scene I've grown tired of for many reasons.
That got me thinking about the other places I
could visit in Wyoming during the peak of baby
season and spring greens. I have a Wyoming Wildlife

Viewing Tour Guide that includes more than 50
drives for seeing animals across the state, and that
reference, along with many notes I have collected
over the years, gave me an idea for a road trip.
I decided to take a weeklong driving tour of Wyoming,
reluctantly avoiding the premier destinations
of Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, but
rather embarking to locations with fewer crowds
and more parking.
Join me on this adventure involving car camping,
minimal planning and camera in hand to explore
six other off-the-beaten-path wildlife viewing destinations
around Wyoming.
Snowy Range
Navigating between the quiet and picturesque
towns of Saratoga and Centennial, Wyoming Highway
130, also referred to as the Snowy Range Scenic
Byway, is one of the few roads in the U.S. that travels
from plains to alpine habitats.
The route starts in the grasslands of the valley
surrounding Saratoga and into the Medicine BowRoutt
National Forest.
