FROM THE
DIRECTOR
Taking on the challenge
By Brian Nesvik
I
vividly remember the phone
call I received in the spring of
1995 when I was offered the
opportunity to put on a red shirt and
work for the Wyoming Game and
Fish Department. I remember the
seemingly unmanageable excitement
and realization that my lifelong
dream, albeit a short lifetime at that
point, was coming to fruition.
On that day more than 29 years ago, my
focus was more on my personal goals and
interests. But, as I reflect on experiences since
that exciting day, I realize how critical it is
for our state and wildlife that the department
attract talented professionals to carry out
our mission.
The call for conservationists and wildlife
enthusiasts has never been louder in a
changing world defined by technology and
an increasing disconnect between nature and
humans. Careers in wildlife management
make a meaningful impact on our state's
natural resources and promise excitement and
fulfillment for those passionate about wildlife.
From wildlife biologists studying big game
migration to fish culturists raising fish and
every discipline in between, our employees
play crucial roles and have the ability to make
a difference.
One of the most compelling aspects
of a career in wildlife management is the
opportunity to work in diverse landscapes
and work hands-on with wildlife. Aspiring
biologists can specialize in studying individual
species and conducting research that informs
conservation strategies - like our sage grouse
biologist. Those with more interest in habitat
enhancement may pursue an aquatic or
terrestrial habitat biologist position. Those

with an interest in interacting with people
and wildlife might find fulfillment as game
wardens, ensuring wildlife laws are upheld
and habitats remain protected. Those with
a knack for accounting can also impact
wildlife management by serving in our fiscal
department. Those who enjoy connecting
others to the outdoors can pursue a career
in conservation education and ensure we
continue to have citizens in the future who
care about our state's tremendous wildlife
resources. More tech savvy professionals can
find fulfillment working in one of our many
technical fields creating maps, developing
applications and keeping the department
up-to-date on emerging technologies.
Beyond the job titles, what truly defines a
career in wildlife is its inherent connection
to our wild places and wild animals. Most
professionals in the field spend their days
outdoors, immersed in rugged environments
studying the species they strive to conserve.
This direct interaction with wildlife fosters
a deep appreciation for our state's natural
resources and underscores the importance of
conservation efforts.
My most rewarding and memorable
experiences have come from working in some
of the wildest and most remote areas in the
country. I've witnessed amazing things while
interacting with hunters and wildlife in the
backcountry. I don't take for granted that
most will never have these experiences. I am
grateful for the opportunities my career with
the department has provided.
A career in conservation is not just a job -
it's a vocation driven by passion and a desire to
make a difference for Wyoming. The diversity
of jobs is vast. In addition to those mentioned
above, we employ computer programmers,
engineers, veterinarians, fish managers, graphic
designers, office managers and others. We have
been fortunate to attract the best and brightest
for decades, and we strongly feel the quality of
our team is a big part of the allure of wearing
a red shirt and working for our department.
If you have an interest in a career as a
wildlife manager, either directly or in a
supporting role, I encourage you to look
at our team. The reward and satisfaction of
working on a great team serving the citizens
of our state is indescribable.
