One thing I love about the great outdoors is that so much transfers. Doing the dishes after the meal is done. Being the first one up, getting the coffee and a fire going. Having a hot drink ready at the end of a long day for your partner, or heck, even a cold beer and a bag of chips. Another of my friends - this one a bird-hunting friend - always feeds my dogs while I'm getting the stove going for our own meal. It has been more than 30 years since I saw the yellow-warm glow of a campfire reflecting against the pines at the end of a long day. My old friend no longer carries a rifle alone into the tall timber but we still can gather on a winter's night, share a meal and talk about the campfires holding back the night. And I'm still paying that lesson forward. - Tom Reed contemplates campfires beside his family's woodstove on cold winter nights.
