Bringing back
fond memories

D
uring my teenage years my family and I traveled a remote
highway near Cody in the fall while visiting my grandparents.
A dense and frosty fog engulfed our vehicle -- limiting
our line of sight to about 30 yards in every direction. The purpose
of this journey was to encounter unfamiliar sights and wildlife not
common around our home in southeast Wyoming. Aside from the
quality time we spent together, we were mostly disappointed by
our view being impeded. But almost in an instant the fog cleared
and unveiled a picturesque scene of pristine foothills filled with
thousands of elk swiftly moving through the landscape.
This will always be one of those memories impossible to describe
because it involved all of my senses and was logged utilizing my
teenage brain. Part of me wished I had a camera to capture a digital
memento but it could never be used to tell the whole story.
But thanks to the many individuals who entered the 2022
Wyoming Wildlife Photo Contest, some old memories were rekindled
and I'm reminded of how beautiful our state truly is.
Photographers once again showcased their photos from the
Cowboy State in the contest, which is in its 53rd year. In total,
3,326 photos were entered by 608 individuals -- showing species,

scenes, activities and flora from every region of Wyoming. All these
people unselfishly offered their time and effort to share images they
were personally proud of and to hopefully be published alongside
other amazing photographers.
During the judging process there were many entries that inspired
judges to wonder about the experiences each photographer
lived through while capturing these moments in time.
" Wait, is that a cormorant standing on a swan? " uttered one
judge in amazement.
" Oh no, I think that's a decoy, " another judge responded.
" How many shutter triggers did it take to capture that
Yellowstone cutthroat trout jumping up those rapids? " asked another
judge.
Another judge asked, " I wonder what that person is photographing
while rappelling in that canyon? "
It is our hope that this issue will encourage this type of dialogue
amongst our readers.
After careful deliberation, the judges narrowed down the entries
to 101 images we believe are the most impactful, create the most
intrigue, demonstrate excellent technical quality and accurately
represented the great state of Wyoming.
