eing a snowcoach driver in
Yellowstone National Park means
you get to see some pretty incredible
things. Frost-encrusted bison walking down
the middle of the road, Old Faithful erupting
at 30 below zero, a fox diving face first into a
snowbank to catch a rodent - the list goes
on. But none of these things compared to the
days I spent watching and photographing the
Wapiti Lake wolf pack hunt and consume an
adult bull bison.
My clients and I left early in the morning,
heading south into the Firehole River geyser
basins. As we went, we heard radio chatter
about wolves. Not being able to make out
exactly what was said, we decided to make
for an area where the Wapiti Lake pack had
recently been seen. As we pulled up to a
group of parked snowcoaches, I couldn't
believe my eyes. On the opposite side of
the river, the pack was hunting a bison. We
photographed the scene for nearly eight hours
in total awe as the wolves and the bison tested
each other all day. By nightfall, the bison was
exhausted, and we left when it was too dark to
see what was happening.
The next morning, we found a bison's
remains in the middle of the Firehole River
and a pack of wolves feeding on it. At one
point, a single black wolf fed alone. As another
member of its pack waded into the river to join
it, it snarled, warning its packmate that it didn't
want to share the half-consumed bison. This
photo is the result, a moment that gives us a
glimpse into the complex social hierarchy of a
wolf pack.
