Lake northeast of Grand Junction, Colorado,
also discovered zebra mussels in 2022. In
October the lake was classified as infested by
Colorado Parks and Wildlife, which is the first
water given that classification in that state.
Fifty-eight boats were discovered with
mussels at Wyoming check stations in 2022,
slightly up from 54 in 2021. That was a big
increase from 2020 when 22 boats were found
to have mussels.
" It does not surprise me that those numbers
have gone up due to the increased risk
we're seeing every year with more waters
becoming positive for mussels and closer to
our borders, " Leonard said. " It also highlights
how effective our inspectors are and how efficient
the program has become over the years.
Our AIS program has only been around for
just over a decade, and we've increased our
knowledge and ability to detect AIS. "
The Evanston port of entry continued to
be the busiest check station in Wyoming.
Personnel in Evanston inspected 20,422 boats
in 2022. The next highest was at Glendo Reservoir
with 8,052 inspections. The Evanston
check station also had more high-risk inspections
(2,590), boat decontaminations (369)
and mussels found on boats (51) than any
other check station in the state last year.
Leonard was pleased with the work the
entire AIS staff did in 2022.
" They're doing an amazing job. I don't
think there's anyone else at Game and Fish
that interacts with the public more than our
folks do, " he said. " Oftentimes they are the
face of the department and at times deal with
people who aren't very happy. I applaud them
for what they've been able to do this year.
Every year they've been asked to do more, and
every year they're willing and able to do that. "
Work and planning for this year is underway.
Leonard said Game and Fish looks to
be more proactive than reactive in northeast
Wyoming like it was after zebra mussels were
found at Pactola, including the potential for
additional check station locations as more
lines of defense to keep AIS from entering
the state's eastern borders.
