10. TRY STARGAZING
Why: Stars in winter are dazzling because
of low humidity in the air, making a clear
view of the sky.
With what: A telescope is great, but you can
see a lot with binoculars. Bring a star chart
and a red light to read it without compromising
your night vision. A compass helps
with orientation.
Insider info: Crawl into a sleeping bag and
recline on a lawn chair to save your neck and
stay warm. Planets are brighter and not on
star charts. Clear, moonless nights are best.
Where: As far from civilization as possible
to avoid light pollution. Try any wilderness
area or outside of town.
11. GO SLEDDING
Why: Flying downhill is a rush for people
of all ages.
With what: Inner tube, flying saucer, toboggan,
plastic two-seater; any sled will work.
Be sure it's age appropriate if you've got kids.
Wear goggles, a helmet, waterproof/breathable
outerwear and warm, weather-proof
gloves.
Inside info: Glide to a stop rather than trying
to brake. Face forward and keep legs and
arms in the sled for the smoothest, safest ride.
Where: Any snow-covered, moderately steep
hill on public land that has a long run away
from streets, parking lots, ponds, fences, trees
and rocks. Try the Happy Jack sledding hill
near Laramie.
12. MAKE A BONFIRE
Why: Bonfires warm your body with their
heat. They warm you twice if you cut the
wood, too, and they warm your heart with
their festive flames.
With what: Pile kindling on top of tinder.
Stack dry logs in a crisscross pattern or positioned
like a loose tepee on top of the tinder
and kindling, then light the tinder with a
match or lighter.
Insider info: Pick a sheltered spot far from
buildings, trees and other flammable objects.
Give it air. Add larger and larger pieces of
wood until the flame reaches the size you
want. Never leave a bonfire unattended, and
be sure it's completely out when finished.
