MAILBAG
EXCELLENT DUCK BACON
I tried Hank Shaw's recipe for duck bacon that ran
in the October 2022 issue of Wyoming Wildlife. It's
excellent. It was easy to make and delicious. I shared
some with my hunting partners, and they raved about
it. Thank you.

CHECK STATIONS AND DEER
Thank you for all your stories, and particularly for
the October issue which describes check stations and
tells us how deer data is collected and used.
Deer hunting in the Wyoming Range is of particular
interest to us and we delight in getting information
from Wyoming Game and Fish Department employee
Gary Fralick both at check stations and when he sends
out annual reports to an email list of interested citizens.
Fralick is in good company with other Game and Fish
employees who provide excellent service to the public,
both in regional offices and in the field.

DOVE QUESTION
I appreciate the articles and information presented
in Wyoming Wildlife regarding the efforts to prevent or
mitigate the invasive species problems we're facing. I
also realize some problems are here to stay, and continuing
to try and limit their effects is a continuous job. I
commend the Wyoming Game and Fish Department
for its work in this area.
I have a question regarding the invasive Eurasian
collared-dove. I recently caught one in my pigeon trap
that appears to either be a crossbreed with a domestic
pigeon or homing pigeon, or a semi-albino. Is this yet

another vector they can exploit? They are pretty much
taking over my old windbreak and pushing out the
Mourning doves.
Thank you for a great magazine, and all the work
you do.

Cheyenne
Chuck,
After consulting with Game and Fish Senior
Wildlife Biologist Grant Frost and Greg Johnson,
research biologist for Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc.
in Cheyenne, it was determined the bird in question is a
leucistic Eurasian collared-dove. According to an article at
cottonwoodpost.com, in most large aggregation of
Eurasian collared-doves there are one or two that are
unusually pale and blotched with white and cream. These
birds have a strong resemblance to African collared-doves,
but based on the dark outer web of the outermost tail
feather, as well as size and vocalizations, these birds are
leucistic Eurasian collared-doves. ~R.G.
