I enjoyed Tim Christie's article on great horned
owls in the October 2023 issue. I have always been
interested in seeing owls and hearing them at night.
It is interesting the way they can hear and see a little
mouse at night.
I was surprised the article didn't mention that
owls do not move their eyeballs. If they want to see
to the side they have to turn their head. Their eyes
stay fixed. I guess that is why they can turn their head
clear around.

JUVENILE DEER CWD DEATHS
I found it interesting that in the story, " Just getting
started, " in the September 2022 issue that you stated
that most of the juvenile mule deer died from chronic

That's a great question and a very astute observation.
The reference to juvenile deaths from CWD refers to a
specific area that saw a higher percentage of juveniles
with the disease compared to other areas. That area had
a small sample size, so even one positive could increase
the percentage significantly. It's worth noting we cannot
say the deer died from CWD, only that they died and
tested positive for the disease. CWD is a slow-progressing
disease that takes 15-16 months to progress to clinical
stages in most animals. - T.B.
wasting disease. Some sources have stated that CWD
is a slow acting disease that can take years to cause
the death of individuals. What am I missing? Do
you find that bucks are problem carriers since they
travel the most?
