Prior to release in Yellowstone National Park, wolves captured in Alberta were held in large pens along the northern border of the park for more than a month. The gates were opened as a " soft
release, " and some wolves took up to a week to exit the pen. (Photo by LuRay Parker/WGFD)
Each management agency has different
laws, regulations and management plans that
align with their respective agency's governing
philosophies and objectives. The Game and
Fish management framework is complex. In
Wyoming, wolves are managed under a dual
classification of trophy game and predatory
animal designations and are managed across
the state in three different zones based largely
on habitat suitability within each zone.
Wolves are designated as trophy game animals
year-round within the area encompassing
the majority of suitable wolf habitat in
northwest Wyoming called the Wolf Trophy
Game Management Area. Wolves within this
area are actively monitored and managed by
the department with the goal of maintaining
the state's commitment of at least 100
wolves and 10 breeding pairs. Wolves in
this area can be harvested during an open
hunting season, which runs Sept. 15-Dec.
31 and is closely monitored. Southwest of
the WTGMA is the Seasonal WTGMA,
where wolves are classified as trophy game
from Oct. 15 through the last day of February
and as predatory animals from March
1-Oct. 14. Strict mortality limits are in place
while wolves are designated as trophy game
animals, and all harvests must be reported.
Wolves in the remainder of the state where
habitat suitability is low are designated as
predatory animals. Wolves may be taken
by the public in this area with no season
or mortality limit restrictions besides the
requirement to report any mortality to Game
and Fish within 10 days.
THE RULE OF 160
Sitting on the slope of a hill, Mills
explained the 160 population objective
outside of Yellowstone National Park. It's a
strategic number designed to ensure there are
at least 11 breeding pairs on the landscape.
" The 160 is crucial. It meets the commitments
for a minimum number of wolves and
breeding pairs and gives us nearly 100 percent
confidence that we will continue to meet
our population objectives, " Mills said. " This
metric holds the wolf density at a healthy,
stable level which reduces conflict and predation
while also limiting the possibility of
