alternative methods to lethal removal of
wolves, and received more than $100,000
from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
which will be combined with other grants
and funding sources, to evaluate whether
motion-sensitive, LED flashing eartags affixed
to cattle can be used as an effective tool for
deterring predators.
Ultimately, it is the department's assignment
to maintain a healthy, functioning wolf
population in a working-lands environment
that has experienced significant alteration
since wolves were first extirpated from Wyoming
90 years ago. Game and Fish has sought
to attain this goal for the benefit of wolves
and people.
" What used to be suitable for wolves is no
longer the case. Land in Wyoming, for better
or for worse, has been changed by human
presence and land uses, " Mills said. "
The large tracts of forested public lands,
wilderness, and lands within the national
parks in the northwest corner of the state
are now considered prime habitats for wolves
in modern society. It is within this area that
wolves are managed with precision. When
wolves wander out of these areas, they become
subject to conflict, which, according to Mills,
is not beneficial for wolves or humans.
Over the last several years, the tolerance of
wolves on the landscape has increased.
Mills attributes this to the department's rigorous
data collection and management efforts.
" Through local conservation efforts and
engagement with its people, Wyoming has
been able to promote a wolf population that is
operating as it should within suitable habitat
while fostering tolerance of wolves by members
of the public most impacted by their presence, "
Mills said. " Whether you like wolves
or not, they are part of the landscape - and
that is part of what makes Wyoming wild. "
