A
lot of my Michigan friends ask me if there is any good
walleye fishing in Wyoming? My answer is always,
" Absolutely! " Many are taken aback by the reply.
Even some Wyomingites are a little surprised by the
quality of walleye fishing in the state. Most anglers think of
trout when they think of Wyoming's cold waters, but there's
some darn-good walleye fishing on several reservoirs across
the state. One of the best is Glendo Reservoir.
Wyoming's sixth-largest reservoir, Glendo
is located in Platte and Converse counties.
The reservoir is created by the North Platte
River and the 2,096-foot-long and 190-foothigh
earthen Glendo Dam. The water is used
mainly for flood control and irrigation, but
a byproduct is the tremendous walleye fishing.
At its maximum, it retains about 1.1
million acre feet of water. The reservoir is
contained completely within Glendo State
Park. Glendo is near the end of a Wyoming
reservoir chain along the North Platte River,
which is one reason it's so prolific for walleye.

of walleye in the state, " said Matt Hahn, Wyoming
Game and Fish Department fisheries
supervisor in the Casper region. " Glendo is
farther down in the system. Because of that,
its water is nutrient-rich and warmer, which
makes it more productive. "
Hahn said because Glendo is used for
irrigation it's drawn down in the summer
months, which sets the stage for the prolific
natural reproduction of walleye the reservoir
sees most years. Because the walleye population
is subject to the whims of Mother Nature,
abundance of the species fluctuates.
" Normally the fishery is totally dependent
on natural reproduction. But in 2016
Game and Fish found the walleye population
was low, so we got 9 million fry from North
Dakota to stock, but the results were very
poor, " Hahn said. " We planted more fry in
2018, but discovered we had one of the highest
naturally reproducing classes that year than
we've ever seen. "
Those walleye fry should be all grown
up now, reaching catchable-length this year.
Natural reproduction is dependent on water
levels, water temperatures, wind and habitat.
" We seem to have outstanding reproduction
following summers when the water levels
get extremely low, " Hahn said. " When a lot
