hotspot in our Western forests, " said Joe
Flower, a wildlife biologist for the U.S. Forest
Service-Shoshone National Forest who is
working on the restoration project. " This certainly
benefits our charismatic big game species,
but aspen support a variety of animals. "
Now in its seventh year the project has
created more than 3,000 acres of aspen habitat
for mule deer, elk, moose, grouse and
migratory birds. In addition to more forage,
the increased moisture of aspen stands have
another benefit: reduced risk of wildfire.
" Because aspen stands are generally wetter,
they can offer some degree of natural
fire break, which can help reduce the risk of
catastrophic wildfires, " Anderson said.
The project is expected to be complete
in 2025, after which crews will monitor the
aspen stands to determine success. The best
aspen stands are those that have aspen of
many ages, creating trees of different heights.
Anderson said the healthiest aspen stands can
be identified because the varied age classes
make it so the stands cannot be seen through.
In addition to land in the Shoshone
National Forest, the project has included
restoration work on land maintained by the
Wyoming State Forestry Division, Bureau of
Land Management, private landowners and
more. Funding has been provided by the U.S.
Forest Service, Game and Fish and a variety
of stakeholders and organizations.
" This has been a really excellent partnership, "
Flower said. " It's a really great, concrete
example of on-the-ground, shared stewardship
on shared lands, water and wildlife
habitat. "
The ongoing aspen restoration project in
South Pass is a one-two punch, meeting the
need to reduce fire fuel and improve habitat.
" It's been a magical partnership, " Anderson
said. " We're getting a lot of good work
done. "
