with vinyl neck bands just like those in the
1963 article. The neck bands are color-coded
to specific feedgrounds, allowing wildlife
managers to easily determine if the elk wintered
on a specific feedground without having
to rely on radio telemetry. This helps wildlife
managers better understand movements and
interchange between elk on seasonal ranges,
as well as on feedgrounds during the winter.
Although some alterations have taken
place, the traps used to capture elk are mostly
the same. In some cases, wildlife managers are
still using the same traps built in the 1950s,
Wise said. Instead of a guillotine-style door

at the chute, they now utilize a series of slider
and swinging gates to process elk through
the trap, much like modern cattle processing
equipment. This new style of elk trap has
proven to be a more efficient and effective way
to handle elk. The elk tend to remain calmer
while biologists collect biological samples and
place collars or ear tags on them.
Even with technological advancements
during the last 60 years, some wildlife management
techniques have lasted the test of
time. When it comes to trapping elk, there's
no need to reinvent the wheel. It's proven
to be an effective strategy, especially where
elk are congregated in large numbers in the
winter.
" It's uncanny how similar what they used
to do is to what we're still doing today, " Wise
said.
