August. This effort includes personnel from Wyoming and Utah, who co-manage the reservoir which spans more than 90 miles in the two states. In addition to creel surveys, Game and Fish uses a variety of techniques to determine how to best manage a fishery. Effective management starts with an understanding of the fish population demographics. Most data collection starts in the field and fisheries managers employ many methods to obtain information, including annual netting operations, fish tagging and by funding research projects. Game and Fish recently wrapped up two large research projects on Flaming Gorge. The first was focused on kokanee stocking. Results from this multi-year project determined stocked fish are critical to maintaining the kokanee fishery. Another project looked at the diets of lake trout smaller than 28 inches. It determined that roughly one-quarter of the diet for this size group consists of kokanee. Too many lake trout in this size group could negatively impact the kokanee fishery. Game and Fish is currently working on another project, coupled with the ongoing creel surveys, to generate a population estimate on lake trout of this size group. Results will be used with the diet data to determine their impact on the reservoir sport fisheries and what it should be to maintain a healthy balance of sport fish and trophy lake trout. Game and Fish also hosts open houses to inform the public on any proposed regulation changes and collect feedback from the public. These are public events held throughout the state and provide the public with a chance to voice opinions and concerns. Anglers interested in attending these meetings and providing feedback can subscribe to the Fishing Update email list or view upcoming meetings by scanning the QR code below. - Regina Dickson is the information and education specialist in the Green River Region.
