OPENING SHOT Waking from a nap Photo: by Dawn Wilson Gear: Nikon D800 Settings: 1/1000 sec, f/8, ISO 800 O n a beautiful, June afternoon I took a break from photography and went for a hike at Trout Lake in the northern region of Yellowstone National Park. After I watched an osprey hunt from above, I continued along the trail around the lake. I found this river otter following my lead - or maybe I was following hers. From a distance I watched her peacefully sleep. I am sure she knew I was there but she didn't show any signs of stirring. After about an hour, she lifted her head, followed by a little licking of her paws and back. She gave a stretch to the left, then to the right and finished the routine with a big yawn and stretch of both paws outstretched in front of her before sliding into the lake to feed.
