Justin Hayward's painting won first place in the Wyoming Game and Fish Department's 40th annual Collectible Conservation Stamp Art Show with this piece titled, " Beaver. "
Casper artist captures first
place in stamp art contest
CHEYENNE - Justin Hayward follows a
long process when he produces a piece of art.
Although arduous, it's rewarding as the Casper
resident won first place in the Wyoming Game
and Fish Department's 40th annual Collectible
Conservation Stamp Art Show.
Hayward won the contest for the third
time. He also won in 2017, which was the
first year he entered, and in 2020. He also
placed second in 2021.
The subject of this year's contest was the
beaver.
" I'm humbled and excited. There were a lot
of good entries this year, " Hayward said. " I'm
not a photographer so I have to use everything
I know to put together an image. I found
different photographs. I make up a lot of
different things in the painting. There are a
lot of things to consider like the lighting and
composition of the subject. It's a long process. "

Hayward's winning entry will be featured
on the 2024 collectible conservation stamp
and limited-edition print. Hayward won
$3,500 for his winning entry.
Winners of this year's contest were
announced in late-April during a live, online
presentation. The contest also debuted a kids
competition for youth between kindergarten
and 12th grades to enter their depictions of
the beaver.
The contest drew 64 adult entries from 23
different states, along with an entry from Quebec,
Canada. Twenty-six entries were from
Wyoming. The kids contest was for Wyoming
students only, and drew 90 entries.
" The inaugural youth contest was an outstanding
addition to this year's show, and it
was inspiring to see the variety of techniques
youth artists used to portray nature's engineers, "
said Chris Martin, Game and Fish
visual communications supervisor and coordinator
of this year's contest. " Next year's
contest will offer artists a different challenge
and feature one of Wyoming's birds. "
The subject for next year's contest is the
western tanager.
" The gears in my head are turning, " Hayward
said. " I don't know much about the bird,
but the colors are amazing. I think there will
be a lot of beautiful and colorful entries next
year. It's going to be really fun. "
