MAILBAG
HAPPY FOR THE ED O.
" I know this place, " I told my husband as I kept
re-reading the opening of the " Ed O. is the big 5-0 "
article in the December 2021 magazine. A flood of
memories and emotions washed over me. It's where
my dad and his buddies hunted mule deer in the
1960s. I hunted the Blue Creek Ranch with them in
1967 when I was 19. I am so glad this land is being
preserved. Thank you.

CUTT-SLAM MEMORIES
I'm sitting at my desk in western Washington,
looking over at one incredible treasure - a certificate
with images of four Wyoming cutthroat trout.
Alongside is a framed set of pictures of the four
cutthroat I caught to receive the honor of completing
the Wyoming Cutt-Slam in 2006.
My wife and I had so much fun traveling the
state to catch all four, but I wanted you to know the
greater pleasure. On our way home to Washington we
stopped along the upper St. Regis River in Montana
and caught a beautiful westslope cutthroat, and
when I got home I headed down to the beach near
my home and caught a coastal cutthroat. All in all
I caught and released a lot of fish and six different
cutthroats.
Thank you for this great program. I learned a
lot about cutthroat habitat in your state and met a
lot of nice people who helped me locate waters to
fish from the Utah border to ... I'm not gonna say.

COULD HAVE USED IN CLASS
I want to acknowledge Lisa Ballard's outstanding
article, " Big Game Survives Winter, " the December
2021 magazine in which she vividly and with
technical detail described the perils our big game
animals face, and the mechanisms they employ to
survive each winter under those harsh conditions. As
a former college professor I would have loved to use
her article as an exercise for my students in learning
energy supply and demand for vertebrates. Please
keep this type of article coming in future issues.
