There are two subspecies of these grouse in Wyoming. The plains sharp-tailed grouse can be found in eastern Wyoming with distribution from the eastern slopes of the Bighorn Mountains and Laramie Range to South Dakota and Nebraska. Limited numbers of Columbian sharp-tailed grouse can be found in Grand Teton National Park and in a section of southern Wyoming. During mating season in the spring, males put on a unique courtship dance at a communal mating ground called a lek. During the courtship, a male lowers his head, extends his wings and stomps his feet to attract a hen.
