or many anglers, this is the time of year we've been
looking forward to. It's a time when temperatures
are relatively cool, and we can finally get to the
lake and really start fishing. For shore anglers, this is a
time before the true heat of summer sets in and pushes
fish out of reach of lines cast from the shore.
Even with Wyoming's relatively cool
summer temperatures, intense sunlight can
increase temperatures of the shallow water
close to the shore beyond the tolerance limits
of cold-water fish by adversely affecting the
oxygen content of the water. This is especially
true at high-elevation lakes.
To cope, fish move to deeper, cooler and
well-oxygenated water offshore, often out
of reach of the shore angler's cast. Even the
cool of early morning often doesn't bring fish
within casting distance. While it can be fun

sitting on the shore with your fishing buddy
solving the problems of the world, we would
rather be catching fish - and lots of them.
I've come up with three solutions to this
conundrum, and only one of them will get
you out on the lake without breaking the
bank. The first solution is tough for lake
and reservoir anglers to take: stay off the
lake. That sounds awful and is an extremely
cruel way to address the situation, but that's
what I used to do. I'd fish as many days as
I could in the spring, take July and August
off of lake fishing and go fly-fishing, then
hit the lake again in the fall. This worked
because I enjoy fly-fishing, but I missed the
lake. For those of you who don't fly-fish
or enjoy fishing on rivers and streams, this
solution is not a solution at all and should
be dismissed immediately.
The second solution is to buy a boat. This
is a costly solution to fish in deeper water.
As the saying goes, BOAT stands for " break
