Kokanee captive
broodstock program excels
CHEYENNE - Kokanee salmon continues
to gain popularity among anglers in
Wyoming, and the Wyoming Game and Fish
Department's cutting-edge captive broodstock
keeps up with those demands and helps the
species thrive.
In 2019 Game and Fish launched its
kokanee captive broodstock program - the
first and still the only one in the United States
- at the Tillett Springs Rearing Station north
of Lovell. Broodstock fish are used for breeding
purposes. The fish are maintained in captivity
as a source of replacement or enhancement for
a population. Before this program, Game and
Fish captured kokanee in the wild, spawned
them on site and released fish back into the
water. As the demand for kokanee grew so
did the pressure on the wild population. The
project provides a regular source for stocked
fish and helps avoid diseases by keeping eggs
and fish in a controlled environment with a
closed water source.
Last year 2.4 million kokanee eggs were
collected from the broodstock. That was an
increase from just under 1 million in 2020

Game and Fish stocks about 1.7 million
kokanee in Wyoming waters annually, and
at least 12 waters are scheduled to receive
kokanee this year.

previously dependent on Wyoming's wild population
for eggs, now we are very self-sufficient
to raise kokanee for anglers, " said Guy
Campbell, Game and Fish fish culture supervisor.
" We should be able to meet all stocking
demands for kokanee this summer. "
The captive broodstock program at Tillett
satisfies all of Game and Fish's statewide, internal
stocking requests for late-run kokanee. Early-run
kokanee are still trapped and spawned
from New Fork Lake near Pinedale each year.
Kokanee are a landlocked salmon and a
favorite for anglers to pursue in Wyoming
waters such as Flaming Gorge and Fontenelle
reservoirs in southwest Wyoming. Other popular
kokanee waters in Wyoming include Boulder
Lake, Fremont and New Fork lakes in the
Pinedale Region, Lake Hattie and Rob Roy
Reservoir in the Laramie Region and Alcova
Reservoir near Casper.
" The popularity of kokanee continues to
grow fast around the state, " Campbell said.
" Anglers are specifically targeting these fish
in many waters, and even tackle shops are
beginning to carry tackle specifically designed
for kokanee. "
