Kid at heart

Working as editor of Wyoming Wildlife
magazine is a fun job. I often find myself
feeling like a kid in a candy store when
I get to create a publication alongside so
many talented people at the Wyoming
Game and Fish Department, along with
talented writers and photographers. For
a word nerd who loves the outdoors it
sometimes doesn't feel like work at all.
Every once in a while a project comes
along that elevates that childlike joy even
more. In my years with the magazine it's
the issues with a special section for kids
that stand out for me. In July 2020 the
magazine released its first Inspire a Kid
issue with a whole section just for kids
and added kid content throughout. Then
in May 2021 we released an issue with
a section about the Wyoming Outdoor
Expo with plenty of activities for kids.
I admit I played all the games, took
part in each activity, colored the coloring
pages and sketched the step-by-step
drawing - although I'm sure most kids
did it far better. Why? Because I'm a kid
at heart. I still get giddy to see a lizard
scrambling through the sagebrush, excitedly
point out wildlife in the field and
whoop when I catch a fish. Some habits
are hard to break - and some you just
don't need to!
In our effort to inspire kids, I was
inspired myself. The concept of another
Inspire a Kid issue was high on the
magazine's list for future projects, and
we wanted to make it even more special.
The Inspire a Kid Adventure Book inserted on page 17 of
this issue is a special supplement for kids.
This time we wanted to give kids something
just for them - the Inspire a Kid
Adventure Book.
The Inspire a Kid Adventure Book is
on page 17 and is a special supplement
just for the kids. It gives them something
of their own to hang onto, carry,
read, mark and color - all in an effort
to inspire their curiosity and excitement
for the outdoors.
If you want more books for your own
kids, a family member or maybe a classroom,
you can make your own copies
or email wyomingwildlife@wyo.gov to
request a digital version to be emailed
to you. We want this to be something
accessible to everyone, so share with as
many people as you'd like. If you're like
me you may even want one for yourself.
