Nontraditional photos can help tell the story of a hunt and show the connection hunters have with their harvests. (Photo courtesy of Peterson family)
H
umans have, since the beginning of time, shared stories
about the food they harvested. Hunts were carved on walls
of caves and cliffs, and oral histories passed down from
generation to generation. A central piece of humankind was
explaining, honoring and celebrating the food we ate and the hunt
required to kill that food.
As technology advanced, so did our ability
to show those hunts in more detail. We likely all
remember seeing images of our grandmothers or
great-grandfathers posed by deer strung up in the
backyard or an elk down in a clearing of trees.
The black-and-white photos are another stark
reminder of our connection to the landscape and
to our food.
Before the internet, they were largely relegated
to old photo albums, keepsake drawers or occasionally
a frame on a wall. Sure, those images could
be shared, but not widely. How the animal and
hunter looked in those pictures mattered - they
were still a record of a critical hunt - but most
people who saw them likely had some context,
knowledge of the hunter and perhaps a story told
alongside.
Today's pictures may still be for our family or
close friends, but often they're shared widely on

social media and context can be lacking.
" People who don't hunt don't always understand
the emotional connection that hunters have
to their harvest, " said Kathryn Boswell, Wyoming
Game and Fish Department hunter and angler
participation coordinator. " Helping them understand
the connection to hunting, the wide variety
of connections and reasons we hunt is important.
You don't want to turn them off before they can
hear you on your message, before they can understand
why you hunt. "
This doesn't mean you should keep all pictures
of your hunt to yourself, or not take any at all. It is
as important now, perhaps even more important
than millennia ago, that hunters talk to nonhunters
about what it means to kill an animal. We
should be telling people about the connection we
have with wildlife that is often difficult to achieve
outside of the hunter and prey relationship. Those
conversations often come through images.
So how do you display an image - or multiple
images - from a hunt that carries the weight
of the sport and stays true to your experience?
How do you bridge the gap between hunter and
nonhunter with a photo and words?
Boswell, Wyoming Wildlife Federation's Jessi
Johnson and Game and Fish Public Information
Specialist Mark Gocke outlined several tips -
often with their own stories - you can take with
you into the field this fall.
