How to tell the difference
between horns and antlers
Does your favorite animal have horns or
antlers?
Most male deer, elk and moose grow
antlers each year. Antlers are made of bone
and grow faster than almost any other
creature's tissue. Animals with antlers grow
new ones each year, beginning in late spring.
New antlers are covered in a soft, furry skin
called velvet. In late summer and early fall,
antlers harden and the animal will rub off
the velvet on shrubs and trees. In the late fall
and early winter, the animal sheds the entire
antler and new antlers begin to grow soon in
their place. It doesn't hurt the animal to lose
its antlers.
Horns are a bone core covered in a sheath
made of keratin, which is what makes up
your fingernails and hair. Sheep, goats, bison
and domestic cattle have horns. Males and
females can have horns, which don't branch
out like antlers. Horns continue to grow
during the animal's entire life and aren't shed
like antlers. Pronghorn are the exception.
They have a branched keratin horn sheath
over a bone core, and they occasionally shed
and replace the sheath.
