Check stations in WY
have long-standing history
The state is home to the country's oldest hunter check station

ach year hunters know Wyoming Game
and Fish Department wildlife biologists
and game wardens will set up hunter
check stations at key locations across
the state. Some of these check stations have
such a long-standing history they have become
something of an institution that has become
synonymous with hunting in Wyoming each
fall, and none more than the Greys River check
station near the town of Alpine.
The Greys River check station is the

longest-running check station in the state.
The check station first opened in 1929, before
Game and Fish employees wore the signature
red uniform. Actually, it was before there were
many employees at all.
To put this time in context, game managers
in Wyoming dedicated the early 1900s to
rebuilding game herds after decades of indiscriminate
hunting. Albert Nelson, Wyoming's
first state game warden, was hired in 1899.
Nelson, a Jackson Hole resident, resigned after
serving three years. The frequent and prolonged
horse rides across the state for trials kept him
away from his responsibilities to family, the
ranch and a taxidermy business. Nelson tried
to turn the tide of lawlessness in Wyoming.
He made numerous arrests but got zero convictions
in court.
D.C. (Dan) Nowlin, his successor, is often
credited with being the state's first game warden
since he was the first to file a report to the governor's
office. In his first report to the governor
in 1902, Nowlin wrote, " All legislation for the
protection of game and fish in Wyoming has
so far been experimental. ... Wyoming has
progressed beyond being the last outpost of
