he impact on wildlife from the winter of 2022-23
was immense. Many mule deer and pronghorn
succumbed to harsh weather conditions and/or
disease. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department
adjusted many big game hunting seasons, especially
for mule deer and pronghorn in western Wyoming.
However, there will be hunting seasons for these
two iconic species around the state, and the outlook
this fall isn't all doom and gloom. And, other big
game species such as elk and moose should provide
hunters with ample opportunities for harvest if
they're willing to put in the work - and if Mother
Nature cooperates.
The information below for the 2023 hunting
season came from biologists and game wardens
from the Game and Fish's eight regions.
ELK
Every region in the state is expected to provide
hunters with good harvest opportunities for bulls
and cows.
Although there was some elk mortality in western
Wyoming from the winter, numbers remain good.

Wildlife managers in the Green River, Jackson,
Pinedale and Cody regions expect good hunting,
and some areas in those regions provide a wide
range of hunting that vary from early-season rifle
hunts in wilderness areas to late antlerless seasons
on private lands to address elk damage to stored
crops and commingling with livestock.
Elk numbers are doing well in the Casper and
Lander regions. Hunters should expect excellent
harvest opportunities in the Lander Region if the
weather is favorable. There are quality chances to
harvest bull elk in the Casper Region. Antlerless
elk harvests also should be good, but it could be
slow early in the season due to the high number
of hunters.
" This season will continue to emphasize female elk
harvest while providing good mature bull hunting
in most areas, " said Justin Binfet, Game and Fish
wildlife management coordinator in the Casper
Region. " Those hunters willing to expend the effort
should continue to enjoy the remarkable numbers
of elk and good success if the weather cooperates. "
The outlook also is positive in the Sheridan
Region
" Now is a great time to be an elk hunter with
ample opportunity to harvest an animal, especially
if you are willing to hunt antlerless elk, " said Tim
