Improved fencing helps
wildlife, habitat in Red Desert
Work that began in 2019 continues this year

T
he northern portion of the Red
Desert in southwest Wyoming is
home to a diverse group of wildlife,
and despite being called a desert,
features a unique blend of habitat. However,
this area needs help if it is to sustain the
ability for wildlife and habitat to coexist and
thrive. A cooperative funding effort by the
Wyoming Game and Fish Department and
other partners was formed in 2019 to contract
steel-jack fence fabrication in this area to aid
wildlife and habitat.
This high-desert ecosystem is home to one
of the largest desert-elk herds in the West and

is a corridor for the Red Desert-to-Hoback
mule deer migration. It also provides habitat
for pronghorn, sage grouse and several other
nongame mammals, birds, amphibians and
reptiles.
Scattered across this dry landscape are
isolated seeps and springs that support riparian
vegetation. In addition to providing essential
water needs, many of these sites provide aspen
and riparian shrub stands that serve as critical
habitat components for most wildlife species.
Moist soil sites also include locations of high
snowpack accumulation where aspen and
other mountain shrubs grow.
These oases are heavily used by elk and
livestock, which threaten sustainable aspen
and riparian vegetation. Shrubs, young trees
and sedges can be severely browsed, grazed
and trampled causing poor habitat conditions.
Continued degradation and loss of these mesic
habitats would have long-lasting negative
consequences for this ecosystem.
The goal of the steel-jack fencing is to
create exclosures at priority sites to reduce
over browsing and trampling by large
ungulates, promote spring and seep integrity
and enhance productivity of aspen and
riparian plants. The fence is constructed of
used drill-stem pipe from energy companies
and is semi-portable. The fence is a four-rail
design with a maximum height of 6½ feet
and a bottom rail 18 inches above the ground,
