herds move based on unique challenges When it comes to mule deer, movement is important. Even within the same herd, movements can vary depending on each deer's needs. While some may stay put throughout the year, others may travel hundreds of miles between seasonal ranges. Whether it's a long-distance trek or staying in the same area year-round, mule deer must have the necessary food, water and shelter to survive. Having different migration strategies within a herd can be beneficial for the population - especially when weather conditions may present more challenges for deer with one migration strategy over the others. These varied movements give the best chance of survival for a herd as a whole. Take a look at the movements of five individual deer from different herds from winter 2022-23 to midsummer 2023. Their stories show that deer can move in very different ways to meet their needs. Wyoming Wildlife | 29
