W
hen Mary Franzel saw a cow moose
lying directly outside her window in
January 2021, her first thought was,
" It's really weird that the mom decided to take
a snooze against the house. "
The moose and her large male calf had been
hanging around Franzel's home in Clark Fork,
Idaho, for a few days and resisted all efforts to
shoo them away. Franzel assumed they were
looking for a handout. Many of her neighbors
feed deer, a practice strongly discouraged by
state wildlife agencies. Other than not being
afraid of her, the cow and calf in her driveway
appeared normal. " You see some moose that
are shedding and look kind of grayish. But
these had beautiful coats, and they had good
weight, " she said.
But soon Franzel, a retired nurse, realized
the cow wasn't napping. The moose lay
motionless, head in the snow; her calf stood
beside her. In a video Franzel filmed from
inside the house, the agitated calf nibbled
and pawed at the cow's face. His hoof made
an audible clunk against her muzzle. But this
moose would never wake. Within days, the
young moose - the big, strong-looking calf
with the beautiful coat - died as well.
They weren't killed by winter ticks,

brainworm or any of the other usual suspects.
Instead, according to T.J. Ross, regional
communications manager for Idaho Fish and
Game, the moose were likely victims of a
most innocuous-sounding substance: food.
The wrong food at the wrong time of year
can prove deadly for big game.
In Wyoming, as in Idaho, it's mostly legal
to feed big game except where prohibited by
county and city ordinance, though wildlife
officials in these states caution against feeding
deer, elk and moose. But wildlife are still
getting fed - usually by well-meaning people
who don't realize they could be responsible for
individual animals suffering and even dying,
or for spreading diseases that could put entire
populations at risk.
" It's a cold, snowy winter, and they feel
like they're doing the right thing, " said Aly
Courtemanch, a Wyoming Game and Fish
Department wildlife biologist in Jackson.
While conducting a moose collaring study
to identify where the big animals are crossing
highways, she and her colleagues have found
local moose scarfing offerings ranging from
livestock feed to frozen fruit - despite a ban
on feeding most wildlife under Teton County
land-use regulations.
" This is really one of the worst things you
could do if you're trying to help any animal
through the hard winter, " Courtemanch said,
adding that more education is needed for the
public to recognize the damage it can cause.
