SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT
While every Game and Fish employee uses technology,
some use it more than others. There are
multiple teams that focus on using tech for research
and to support field personnel. Some sections focus
on hardware, including keeping technology infrastructure
up and running, while others focus on data
collection and creating maps for use by field staff and
the public. One team, the software developers, uses
computer science to help Game and Fish employees
and the public.
If you applied for or purchased a hunting or fishing
license, registered a boat or used the Game and Fish
interactive fishing guide, you have interacted with
something the Game and Fish software developers
built. If you stopped at a game check station in the
last few years, the biologist entered data about your
harvested animal on an application created by the
developers. If you purchased a Wyoming fishing
license or aquatic invasive species decal at your local
bait shop, developers built the software to make that
happen. They support and maintain more than 100
applications for the department.
Game and Fish software developers find creative
solutions to problems by developing web-based and

mobile applications. They collaborate with staff to
understand the processes currently being used to do
things like care for fish at hatcheries, manage deer
populations or sell licenses, and use coding languages
like C#, SQL and HTML to create streamlined
programs to update or replace outdated systems.
These are full-stack developers, meaning they build
the data structure on the back end of applications
and design how it looks to the user on the front end.
" We have the freedom to build exactly what we
need and make it fit our needs, " said Sarah Reichert,
Game and Fish senior application developer/business
analyst. " What we build is used every day. "
Data collected from apps is used in annual reports,
law enforcement investigations and wildlife management
decisions. As everything runs internally, data
becomes available quickly and decisions can be made
in close to real-time.
Whether it be trout, bighorn sheep, elk or sage
grouse, software developers support the work field
staff do to benefit wildlife. Though they do not
often work directly with the public, Game and Fish
software developers work to better serve Wyoming
sportspersons by creating useful, efficient and streamlined
products.
