He was blessed with an incredible desire to win, but he brought much more to CDM Smith than just desire. He innately understood the role client relationships played in sales and in the delivery of exceptional consulting services. When the seminal research on truly visionary companies was first published two decades ago, suggesting that “client intimacy” was one of three ways that great companies distinguish themselves, one immediately thought of Bob Marini. Bob understood viscerally the importance of client relationships; relationships that understood the client’s project needs, the client’s body politics, and the client’s family and non-work priorities. achievements, Bob was adept at not only building relationships, but also at making the effort to maintain them. While he admits to reading for relaxation, and always

being a crossword puzzle fan, he continues to emphasize that the work was his hobby in saying, “I was obsessed with the firm; with seeing it succeed and grow in ways that really helped people.” As he progressed in his leadership roles with the firm, he became a mentor to many of CDM Smith’s senior managers and an example for establishing and maintaining strong client relationships and providing unparalleled client service. Speaking on his leadership roles with the firm he states, “I was proud to be a part of the strategic planning that still serves as a basis for CDM Smith operations today. I was honored to guide CDM Smith into the hazardous waste side of the industry and help to secure the firm’s first major contract with the USEPA.” Bob continued as Chairman of the Board and CEO until his retirement in 1997. He remained on as Chairman of the Board, then Vice Chairman until 2001, when he gained Chairman Emeritus status. In addition to his corporate success, he was also able to watch his three children 13
