EXCELLENCE AND INNOVATION IN WATER ENGINEERING PROJECTS RECOGNIZED
The International Water Association announced the 2012 IWA Project Innovation Awards Global winners. Winners received their awards at the 2012 PIA Global Awards Ceremony and Dinner held September 19, 2012, at the Grand Ballroom of Paradise Hotel Busan, Korea. IWA also launched the inaugural IWA Executive Director Prize for Impact at Scale which honors a global water project that has positively impacted the lives of many through the benefits brought about by the innovations adopted. This prize is not subjected to the judging by the global panel, but is selected by IWA from amongst the projects entered into the PIA competition. One such prize will be given out at every edition of the PIA. The recipient for the Prize is the project Greater New Orleans Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS) - 100-Year Level of Protection by the U.S Army Corp of Engineers and ARCADIS. The Project Innovation Awards Program (PIA) was established by the International Water Association in 2006 to recognize excellence and innovation in water engineering projects throughout the world. The Awards Program supports IWA’s goal to “connect water professionals worldwide to lead the development of effective and sustainable approaches to water management.” For the 2012 PIA, submitted projects first competed in one of the four regional bases in the Asia-Pacific, East Asia, Europe & West Asia; and North America The North America regional competition was conducted through the American Academy of Environmental Engineers’ (AAEE) Excellence in Environmental Engineering Competition. A total of 54 regional winning projects were submitted for the PIA global competition. 54 regional winners and honor awardees are advanced to compete against each other for the PIA Global Grand Prize in each of the six categories, and the Global Grand Prize Winner with the highest overall score will be awarded the Superior Achievement Award.
