Environmental Engineer Fall 2012 - 25

The Rollout of the
ver the past two and a half years, a dedicated team of environmental engineers and scientists has developed the new Board Certified Environmental Scientist (BCES) certification program. Since, the BCES was formally approved by the Academy’s Board of Trustees on November 12, 2011, Academy staff have been working closely with this team to rollout the new certification. This article is the second in a series of communications with our members to make them aware of the progress being made in this area. The Academy’s development of the new Board Certified Environmental Scientist certification aligns us with the modern implementation of environmental projects by including both engineers and scientists in our organization. Like the existing BCEE and BCEEM programs, the BCES will confer a specialty certification. We are developing certifications in the following areas: Air Resources Environmental Biology Environmental Chemistry Environmental Microbiology Environmental Toxicology

The applicant will have to pass a written and oral exam (oral only, if more than 16 years experience, 12 in responsible charge).

The BCES Seed Class

The Academy’s Certification by Eminence Program has always sought out mature, senior level professionals engaged in the practice of environmental engineering in academia, consulting, government, industry, research, and the military. This program is experience rather than examination driven, utilizing a critical experience threshold of at least 20 years, with 10 of those years in a senior position for practitioners, and full, professor rank for academics. This program recognizes individuals with exceptional demonstrated competency in environmental practice. The existing Certification by

Eminence Committee expanded its scope to include environmental scientists and sought out, evaluated and recommended to the Academy’s Board of Trustees (BOT) suitably qualified candidates for certification as Board Certified Environmental Scientists. This “seed” class of BCESs (see the box on page 26) was approved by the BOT in our April 27, 2012, meeting. This first class of BCESs is vital to the implementation of the new program as it will provide individuals capable of taking supporting and leadership roles on various Academy operating committees. The eminence selection process will continue to seek out additional highly qualified environmental scientists, just as it seeks Environmental Engineers.

Admissions Process

The Academy has developed the initial application form for the BCES and placed it on our website. Applications for the BCES can now be made. The existing Admissions Committee is adding several BCESs, in order to assist with the processing of applications. Applications are already being received and will be integrated into the committee’s well established and effective screening process. Once applicants have 25
