CORONAVIRUS AFFECTING CHINA BASE OIL TRADE
COVID-19, or the new coronavirus, has resulted in many Chinese manufacturing
plants closing early this year, including base oil and lubricant plants. The virus has
also affected trade flows. Much of the base stock destined for China had to find a
new home. According to Lube Report, analysts predict prices will fall as producers
try to offload cargoes. Meanwhile, the rest of the world is also experiencing an
outbreak of COVID-19, and many countries have closed their borders, impacting
exports to those markets.
NAM TESTIFIES BEFORE CONGRESS IN THE FIGHT TO PROTECT IP
The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) testified to Congress on the
global intellectual property (IP) challenges and priorities for manufacturers in the
U.S. That testimony came with a full list of recommendations on a country-bycountry basis to protect the full scope of threats to manufacturers' IP. NAM
Director of International Business Policy Ryan Ong told Congress, "Winning
the fight against counterfeiters requires everybody - not just manufacturers, but
e-commerce platforms and search engines, customs agents and consumer safety
advocates - to get serious. Stopping the flow of these products means not just
legal and policy changes, but smarter enforcement priorities, better coordination
and information sharing, and a serious commitment by all parties to do their part."
3D GRAPHENE SHOWN TO BE EFFECTIVE NANOSCALE FILLER
Researchers from Henan University of Science and Technology and the Chinese
Academy of Sciences are investigating the use of 3D graphene in advanced
lubricants. While nanoparticles are often used to improve properties of materials,
they have not caught on across the board in developing lubricants because of
their limited strength under extreme conditions. Professor Bingli Pan, one of the
study's lead authors, told Advanced Science News, "The tribological properties of
the composite are extremely excellent even under harsh sliding conditions, and
only a small amount of graphene filler is needed through the formation of [3D]
structures, which can save on cost."
CAN HYDROCARBON LUBRICANTS CONTROL HYDROGEN
EMBRITTLEMENT?
According to a paper published on nature.com, researchers think they may have
found a way to control hydrogen embrittlement. This embrittlement results from
hydrogen diffusing rapidly through the lattice of solid materials used in lubricated
rolling-element bearings. If they are right, this brings us one step closer to hydrogen as a viable fuel source for automobiles. Their findings show that hydrocarbon
lubricants can control hydrogen embrittlement by influencing the generation and
characteristics of the wear track tribofilm and, therefore, the wear mechanism.
