groups will look to seize upon the
COVID-19 pandemic to make
further economic stimulus packages in
Congress contingent on accelerating
the demise of the internal-combustion
engine. If the Democrats win the
White House and control the next
Congress, the change will be dramatic
and swift. Even if President Donald
Trump wins reelection, will global
automakers mobilize even more
capital to electrification of vehicles,
including new platforms and battery
factories? Under any scenario, the
COVID-19 pandemic has let the
public know that there is a possible
different world - that is, a glimpse
at what a cleaner, greener world might
look like without a pandemic and a
historic economic depression.
What happens to the just-in-time
global supply chain economy that has
crashed because of the novel coronavirus,
revealing its fragility and failures? At a
minimum, it has exposed holes in the
economic framework that have been
built on outsourcing and offshoring,
algorithms and broken political systems.
It is likely that there will need to be

a redistribution of the risk from the massive dependency on logistics that have
disrupted supply chains as COVID-19
spread across the globe from its origins
in Wuhan, China. ILMA members will
need to develop new strategies to deal
with disruptions in the long term to
once-reliable sources of supplies.
ILMA members and companies
everywhere rightly confronted the
unprecedented public health crisis by
focusing on employee safety and supporting their families and communities.
Members scrambled to keep their facilities running. As we hopefully move
past the acute phase of the COVID-19
pandemic, there should be clarity that
disruptions are occurring at faster rates,
whether they are from Brexit, geopolitical events, localized disease outbreaks or
natural disasters. It is not solely about
pandemics.
As a result, like on 9/11 when
Americans discovered that we are vulnerable to horrific acts of terrorism, or
when the 2008 financial crisis taught
us we could suffer the same financial
issues as the Great Depression, or how
the 1918 flu pandemic is back in the

limelight, it will be interesting how
people react to being unable to shake
hands or wanting to connect with
others while keeping a social distance.
Creative people, like ILMA
members, will figure out how to
navigate these uncertain times and to
articulate a clear path forward for their
organizations. Use some of the current
isolation time to disaggregate what has
happened and plan new systems and
processes going forward.
Lastly, Americans have long equated
patriotism to service in the armed
forces. However, guns and tanks cannot
kill the coronavirus. Those on the front
lines of the COVID-19 pandemic have
been the health care professionals, first
responders, pharmacists, teachers, store
clerks, utility workers and the workers
at essential businesses, including ILMA
member companies. Thank you for
